If your organisation needs a simple, efficient way to manage copyright compliance cost and risk, then a copyright licence is here to help.
If people in your organisation are copying content from books, journals, magazines or newspapers then our licence is a valuable tool to make your work much easier.
Does your organisation need a copyright licence?
Your organisation needs easy access to information, however, making multiple copies from printed resources often requires permission from the copyright owner. A copyright licence is a time-saving and cost-effective way of securing instant permission, in advance, to copy from published material including books, journals and magazines. Not only does it give you increased legal protection, but you also gain the assurance that the copyright owners will be paid when their work is copied.
Here's an overview of what's covered under our copyright licences
What material can you copy?
- Material that orginates from a printed book, journal or magazine (often called hard copies)
- A scanned or digital copy of an original printed version
How much can you copy?
- Up to 10% or one chapter of a book (whichever is greater, including pictures and graphs)
- Complete magazine and journal articles (one per issue, more if on the same subject)
- Overseas newspaper articles (five per issue, from online or hard copy)
How can you share this material?
- Password protected intranet sites (eg. staff portals)
- Handouts, briefing notes and staff compiled worksheets (printed and digital)
- Interactive whiteboards and screens
Simplify your copyright law compliance
This copyright licence provides permission to re-use printed material sourced from books, textbooks, journals, magazines, newspapers and periodicals.
Compliance with the law: the licence provides a simple, cost-effective way to copy materials. It compliments your other licences and OA materials.
Risk management: as a licence-holder, your organisation will be indemnified against legal action by owners of material included in the licence. Licence-holders have access to free copyright education material and our help-desk.
Support authors and publishers: licence fees fund authors and publishers - including many local creators - to continue to produce information you need for your organisation.
Flexible licence extensions: additional licence provisions available through MyCopyright (our online portal) to support compliance in exceptional circumstances beyond the standard licence terms. Additional fees apply.
Pricing and licence period
Pricing is based on your number of FTES (Full Time Equivalent Staff), making copyright compliance a predictable fixed cost.
Our copyright licences can be activated for the first time at any point throughout the year, and are issued for the period January to December. Renewed at the beginning of every year, all you need to do is update us with your staff/organisation numbers and we'll take care of the rest. If you're unsure of how many people you will need to licence for, talk to us and we can help you work though it all.

What isn't included in a copyright licence?
Copyright applies to published material including books, journals, newspapers, magazines, art and music - even when the copyright symbol © is not displayed. Our licence doesn't include material licensed by other collective management organisations and alternative licensing arrangements such as OA.
Our various licences enable organisations that have licensed with us to copy and share much more than is available under the Copyright Act. But there are exclusions to what can be copied, find out more here >>
