In the past few weeks, as New Zealand has moved into level 4 lockdown, our small team has been busy working to support you. Here’s a short outline of what we’ve been up to.
In late 2019 (which seems so long ago given what’s happened in the world since), Copyright Licensing New Zealand developed a new, four year strategy for the organisation, which is underpinned by three words - simplify / enable / experts.
In the past few weeks, as New Zealand has moved into level 4 lockdown, our small team has been busy delivering on these strategic pillars in a variety of ways. Here’s a short outline of what we’ve been up to.
For Tertiary Licensees
- A temporary licence extension to support New Zealand universities’ efforts to retain students from China who are currently unable to enter New Zealand to study.
- An extension of the temporary licence to support efforts to transfer to online (only study for universities and ITPs).
- Obtaining permission directly from publishers for copying in excess of normal licence limits so that interruptions to student’s learning is minimised.
For Schools and Libraries
- Worked with the Coalition for Books to establish a Storytime programme with public and school libraries.
- Supported the Ministry of Education with the development of copyright information for teachers who are developing remote learning programmes for students.
- Responding to an increasing number of copyright queries from schools and libraries.
For Authors and Publishers
- Fast-tracked the payment of overseas licensing revenue to New Zealand rightsholders (three months earlier than in previous years)
- 72-hour turn-around of the ALCS UK payments to New Zealand authors.
- Accelerating the MyCopyright adoption campaign to enable us to pay New Zealand authors and publishers faster.
- Submitted on the Public Lending Right (PLR) Review and held a meeting (online, of course!) with the agency conducting the Review to share best-practice in using technology to get revenue to authors. We encourage you to make your own submission here >>
- Bringing forward the opening dates for the 2020 CLNZ/NZSA Writers’ Award and Research Grants applications (with the first opening on 30 April 2020).
- Accelerating processing of survey data to get 2020’s licence distribution funds out much earlier
For Visual Artists
- Conducting a survey on the impact of Covid-19 on the visual arts sector to use with government to advocate for visual artists.
We will be making more announcements soon including a call for applications to our various Cultural Fund programmes.
