Reporting infringements

Imagine –

At the beach one evening you witness a stunning sunset. You take a photograph which captures all its glory. Later you have it enlarged and framed. The man at the photo-shop makes a copy for himself without your permission. He enters your photo in a competition and wins $50,000. You get nothing.

Or –

You’ve toiled for months writing a book in your spare time. When it’s published you hope to get a little monetary recognition. However a purchaser makes lots of photocopies and gives them away free. No one needs to buy your book. You get nothing.

How would you feel?

Theft isn’t restricted to tangible forms of property. You may be criminally liable if you copy a work, or part of a work, without permission or a licence. A copyright holder may also claim damages for compensation against his loss.

Penalties for copyright offences carry a maximum of five years imprisonment and/or up to $150,000 per offence.

We will pay for physical evidence of infringement, e.g. a copy of work that has been illegally copied and provided to students.

If you would like to report an instance of copyright infringement please contact us on 0800 480 271 or e-mail us at cll@copyright.co.nz.

All information will be treated confidentially.
